Founded in 2007, the Ice-Watch brand is the result of a collaboration between Belgian Jean-Pierre Lutgen and Chinese fashion designer Polly Yu So. The brand, which is known for its colourful and fashionable watches, has its origins in the Belgian region of Bastogne. Despite initial financial difficulties, the brand managed to raise the funds for its first major production order through advance payments from customers. As a result, one million euros were raised in 2009 and 330,000 watches were ordered in China - an impressive five-fold increase on the original order quantity.

From these humble beginnings, Ice-Watch quickly developed into a global phenomenon. By the beginning of 2011, more than 1.7 million watches had been sold worldwide at prices ranging from 59 to 189 euros. The watches were sold as fashion accessories in over 80 countries and via 14 authorised web shops. Despite this success, Ice-Watch was confronted with legal challenges. The Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch claimed that the name Ice-Watch had been deliberately chosen to provoke confusion with its own brand. Following a series of court rulings and a "demarcation agreement" in May 2008, both companies were allowed to continue using their trade marks under certain conditions.
